ABOUT US

Our Mission:

PATH’s mission is to serve, through committed dedicated staff and well-equipped volunteers, the economically disadvantaged people in Smith County with both emergency assistance and programs to empower and encourage them to become self-sufficient.  PATH’s programs address the multiple factors affecting low income families that keep them in poverty, place them at risk of becoming homeless or in need of crisis intervention services, and limit the potential of children and adults to live stable, secure and prosperous lives.

Our History:

Gertrude Windsor was born with a heart for helping others. She often gave food from her back door to help the homeless and feed the hungry. In 1984, Mrs. Gertrude Windsor had a vision to do more for the community. She gathered together congregational and civic leaders to create an organization destined to be a safe place for people to come for help. The result of those efforts was called People Attempting To Help (PATH). In 1985, PATH began serving families in need.

After 28 years, PATH continues to serve Smith County with a small, diverse staff and a large base of supporters. Approximately 400 volunteers serve across PATH’s programs addressing both emergency assistance and programs that empower and encourage self-sufficiency. The PATH staff and volunteers touch thousands of lives each month with a unique approach to serving. Every individual/family coming to PATH meets with a Case Worker every time they step through the doors of PATH. The Case Worker spends time with each client in order to:

  • Understand current situation and needs
  • Identify underlying issues or obstacles
  • Provide direction and referrals to internal and external resources as needed

PATH remains a flexible organization, growing and changing to respond to emerging community needs.
